A Message from Provost Kiho Kim
The study abroad programs at Washington College are critical to education, particularly a liberal arts education. It is difficult to fully understand our place, or passions, without fully seeing the world around us. For students who develop in this environment and to be successful, they should be exposed to different ideas, cultures, and experiences of other people— to be fully immersed. Study abroad is a gem of liberal arts education with intentional curriculum to get students out of their comfort zone.
If you are looking to go abroad, do it! It is much easier to travel now than it has ever been. Now there is a cost to travel, and it’s not always cheap, but the great thing about Washington College’s programs is that there is opportunity to apply for funding to offset the cost of study abroad. This is a distinct benefit of being a student at Washington College. Definitely take advantage of these opportunities!

A lot of my previous travel comes from academics. Early on, I decided I wanted to be a marine biologist. This meant I needed to travel. For my research interests, my first trip was to the Bahamas on a sail boat. It was cool to see different geography and places.
Being in a different environment was very exciting and it led to a lifelong passion for travel. After my undergraduate studies, a couple of friends and I embarked on a trek across the southern hemisphere: Australia, New Zealand, Fiji! It was amazing. This continued in my work as an academic as I travelled throughout the world as a researcher in the West Pacific, places like Guam, Saipan, and American Samoa.
